"Art on the Inside" Opening at Space One Eleven! Friday, February 11, 2011 5:00 p.m. Space One Eleven, 2409 Second Avenue North, Birmingham, AL.
| Art on the Inside, an exhibit from the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project (APAEP), will be on display at Space One Eleven in Birmingham from February 11 through March 25, 2011. The opening will be Friday February 11, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. The exhibit, which features the work of students from APAEP's art classes inside Alabama state prisons, includes work from 2004 to 2010. APAEP, which is an outreach program of the College of Liberal Arts at Auburn University, developed the traveling exhibition as a way to highlight the artistic accomplishments of prison students who take the classes, but to also promote public dialogue on the importance of educational opportunities for those who are incarcerated. APAEP offers classes in the arts and humanities and funds Alabama writers, artists, and scholars to teach the 14 week classes. APAEP has been working with the Alabama Department of Corrections since late 2002 to offer these classes, and more than 1400 individuals have participated.
