Window Installations Space One Eleven is located at 2409 Second Avenue North between 24th and 25th Streets amidst the busy urban thoroughfare of Second Avenue North. Its location serves as an eastern gateway into the heart of the Historic Loft District and Downtown Birmingham as over 7,000 cars per day spill off of the Elton B. Stephens Expressway and on to Second Avenue North. These cars pass directly in front of our Installation Windows and are presented with the art work of both professional artists and the students of City Center Art.
The Birmingham Art Collective Founded in May 2007, The Birmingham Art Collective works to help artists, designers, photographers, writers, musicians, actors, and other creatives in Birmingham promote themselves and their work. When The Collective puts on a show, the barrier to entry is low and the culture is pro-creative, allowing the artist to take chances and risk more. The Collective encourages art installations and unconventional mediums. It’s goal is to give new artists an opportunity to develop their work and to give seasoned artists a chance to reach new audiences. |

A CONVERSATION SYLVIE FORTIN AND MARGOT S. WADE
Discuss Wade’s installation: “Pubic Places Private Spaces”
Join them to hear & be heard! To be seen & connect! SPACE ONE ELEVEN Thursday, February 25, 2010 7PM
Wade describes her installation as “…a work of friction.” Making social commentary on every surface in the gallery, the looming force is the proverbial elephant in the room. Art historian, Shirley Osband writes “She invites us to dinner where we eat her words, on great grandmother’s china may-she-rest-in-peace; there’s an elephant in the room whose baggage is tied to its tail: a wedding train with its bride, cornered and floating on a high. Fortin is the Editor-in-Chief of Atlanta based Art Papers, an internationally distributed critical journal that engages artists, critics, curators scholars, collectors and readers to provoke discussions. She is an independent curator, art historian, critic and editor who has worked internationally since 1991. She was Curator of Contemporary Art at the Ottawa Art Gallery (Ottawa, Ontario, 1996—2001.) Fortin studied Art History at the University of Toronto, Université Laval, and Duke University. She has received numerous significant grants and awards as a critic and curator, as well as for her academic research.
